Gild Reader Open the app

A calm reader for the books you already own.

Gild opens your EPUB and PDF files and sets them like a well-made book. No account, no ads, and nothing leaves your device.

Start reading, free

Gild runs in your browser today, on phones, tablets and computers, and keeps working offline. The Android app is coming to Google Play.

Two pages when your phone unfolds

Open a foldable phone or a tablet and Gild sets the book as a spread, with each page still a comfortable width to read. Fold it again and you’re on the same sentence, one page at a time.

Moby-Dick in Gild on an unfolded phone: chapter one across two pages side by side

What Gild does

Pages that look printed
Four reading typefaces, careful spacing and hyphenation, and themes from paper to true black.
Two pages on an unfolded phone
On a Fold or a tablet, Gild shows a spread when each page still fits comfortable lines, and one page when it doesn’t.
Your place, exactly
Change the text size, rotate or fold your phone, and you’re still on the same sentence.
Highlights and notes
Mark passages, add private notes, and export them all as Markdown for your notes app.
Yours alone
No account and no tracking. Books stay on your device, and backups go only where you choose.
EPUB and PDF
Footnotes, contents, search and bookmarks for EPUB; zoom, margin cropping and search for PDF.

Free books to start with

Thousands of classics are free because their copyright has run out. In the Gild app, tap Browse free classics to search Project Gutenberg and download a book straight into your library. Or download an EPUB from either library and open it with Gild.

Copyright lasts different lengths of time in different countries. Both libraries list books that are free in the United States, and a few may still be in copyright where you live, so check before you download.

Concept illustration. The real reader is being prototyped now.

We’re designing a Gild reader you can hold.

A small E Ink reader with a paper-like screen that’s easy on the eyes, made to fit one hand and a pocket, with Gild built in.

It’s in development, so there’s no price or date yet. Leave your email and we’ll write when there’s something real to show you.

We’ll only use your email for news about the Gild reader. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at hello@gildreader.com. See the privacy policy.
